Degania Aleph/We will always be the First/Kibbutz Degania Aleph
Degania, the mother of the communes and kibbutzim, was founded in 1910. A dozen young people from the Second Aliyah arrived in the Jordan Valley, began to till the soil and fulfill a vision of an egalitarian society. We will tell stories about the founders, about the pioneers of Degania who came here and against all odds established something new: kibbutz. We shall visit the authentically preserved Founders’ Courtyard and we will hear about those pioneers and their way of life – about Gordon, Bussel, Ruppin, Miriam Baratz and Rahel the poetess.
Interactive Exhibition and Activity – “the Long Furrow” with actor and guide. Entering the pioneers’ world from the beginnings in Europe, via the dilemma of making Aliyah, founding the kibbutz and the attempt to fulfil Herzl’s vision of creating a model society in Eretz Yisrael. The activity takes place at Um Juni, coordinated in advance and in a group of at least 15 people.
